This Week in Religion - Non-Christian voices at RNC draw pushback

Lead story

Harmeet Kaur Dhillon offers a Sikh prayer at the Republican National Convention.

Editor's note:

In the first hours after the attempt on Donald Trump’s life in western Pennsylvania on Saturday, faith leaders and fellow politicians offered prayers of thanks that the GOP candidate’s life had been spared. But soon came broader assertions, like that of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, that “God protected Trump,” implying, as conservative Christians have in the past, that the former president has been selected especially – and now preserved – by God to lead the United States. As the Republican establishment gathered in Milwaukee days later, this theme gained momentum, with South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, an evangelical Christian, telling the crowd, “If you didn’t believe in miracles before Saturday, you better be believing right now,” adding, “Our God – our God – still saves. He still delivers. And he still sets free.”

The messianic rhetoric surrounding Trump’s near miss in Pennsylvania solidified the Christian flavor of the convention so far, where images of American flags flying next to Christian crosses were projected even as a Jewish Republican leader spoke, and some Republicans objected to a prayer being offered by Harmeet Kaur Dhillon, a GOP delegate from California who is a Sikh. While the convention’s nominee has hinted that the shooting caused him to soften his speech, scheduled for Thursday, as a call for unity, the convention was already faced with overcoming its uneven embrace of religious difference, reports RNS's Jack Jenkins.
