TCR Breaking News - King Letsie III of Lesotho Visits Bethel AME Church, Columbia, South Carolina

On Sunday, September 22, His Majesty King Letsie III of the Kingdom of Lesotho worshipped at Bethel AME Church in Columbia, South Carolina. The King came specifically to thank the 7th Episcopal District for renovating the FC James Centre of Service in Lesotho's capital, Maseru. Bishop Frederick Calhoun James established the centre during his time as Presiding Prelate of the 18th Episcopal District from 1972-1976.  After being introduced by Bethel's pastor, Rev. Dr. Ceasar R. Richburg, the King referred to the Centre as a critical landmark for the city and the country. The renovations were completed under the leadership of the then-18th Episcopal District Francine A. Brookins, with a large portion of the monies coming from the 7th Episcopal District through then-Bishop Samuel L. Green, Sr.  The King remarked, "We hope that you will continue to help the church in Lesotho and to help the 18th Episcopal District." He also invited Bishop Jeffery Cooper of the 18th Episcopal District to participate in the 200th anniversary of the founding of Lesotho next year. The King was also presented with a book of Bishop James's memories by his long-time assistant. The King's father and Bishop James were friends and shared a long-standing relationship. After acknowledging resident 7th Episcopal District Bishop James L. Davis, Bishop Cooper stated, "I am blessed to be present for his majesty's visit, and I look forward to going next month. I think it is always a good thing when people express their kindness to others."
