Faithful Footprints: Rejuvenating the Tatamagouche Centre

Faithful Footprints logo and a large window with a view of field and trees

Staff and board members of Tatamagouche Centre say "Tatamagouche Centre is more important and relevant than ever, and we see it enduring and flourishing." Over the past two years, due to COVID-19, Canadians experienced the brunt of lumber scarcity, inflation, and building closures. Despite these challenges, many United Church properties were still able to see the crisis as an opportunity to retrofit buildings and become more sustainable thanks to the support of The United Church of Canada’s Faithful Footprints program. The Atlantic Christian Training Centre, also known as the Tatamagouche Centre, was one of the many communities that took full advantage and continued their efforts to rejuvenate and upgrade their building. Learn more in “How the Power of Perseverance Sustained the Tatamagouche Centre Rebuild Project."

Cost of Living Group Changes to Be Phased In

Canadian Money

In 2006, General Council affirmed the principle of regionally based minimum comprehensive salaries for ministry personnel that reflect local cost of living. In 2015, the principle was implemented, with pastoral charges assigned to one of six cost of living groups based on median home values.

In 2021, the United Church engaged compensation specialists from the consulting firm Mercer to review this model. A revised model has been developed using federal government data on housing, property taxes and utilities, provincial taxes, and goods and services, contributing to the determination of the cost of living groups in each location.

More information including the model and updated assignments will be available by the end of November. To facilitate the transition, the new cost of living model will be effective in July 2023.

Mission & Service Partner Urges Banning Killer Robots

Graffiti with the words "No war"

Killer robots sound like creepy sci-fi. But they are real, and the World Council of Churches—a Mission & Service partner—is taking them seriously. So much so that in 2021, it released a campaign guide for churches on the topic in six different languages.

United Church Bookstore: The Other Side of the River

Book of the week: The Other Side of the River

The Other Side of the River by Alf Dumont challenges the church to re-examine the theology behind its past decision around residential schools so that it might live out the words of its apologies. Dumont calls on Canada to re-examine its responsibilities and relationships with Indigenous peoples. He uses stories, humour, poetry, and insight to share his wisdom. The author served as a United Church of Canada minister for 40 years in several churches, and was also the Director of Sandy-Saulteaux Spiritual Centre, an Indigenous theological centre of the United Church. You can also catch Alf Dumont on November 8, at 7:00 p.m., as part of the live events for 40 Days of Engagement on Anti-Racism in Anti-Racist Authors of Faith

Don't forget to use promotional code 40DAYS to receive a 20% discount off orders of two or more books until November 30. Combine with promotional code FREESHIPPING for free shipping on orders of $100 or more.
