In trying to define ecumenism, Koch cites the prayer of Jesus “that all may be one,” and reflects that “Jesus has prayed for unity because he wants to have one church and not a plurality of churches.” When we do the will of Jesus, Koch adds, “we cannot be heretical.” In light of a world full of hate speech, Koch urges “re-finding” a unity of faith. “This is not a political or diplomatic issue but a faith issue,” he says. As we work today to promote ecumenical awareness, Koch believes we must embrace dialogues of love, friendship, and truth. “Some problems we have today are because we don’t know each other,” he says. “When we have a better knowledge of one another, we can deepen the reality that we have more in common.” He also believes the media has an important role, particularly in a dialogue of truth, “not an ideology but to bring the clear reality to the people and to search for the truth in the reality,” Koch says. “I think that is a very important message and mission of the media.” Koch also expresses gratitude for the relationship between the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity and the Middle East Council of Churches. “I think we can learn from each other,” he said. “I know that people in the Middle East have much suffering, many challenges, and many, many problems and I am praying every day for peace and justice in this important region, that you can re-find peace because this is the condition for the good human life.”
Organized by the World Council of Churches’s Commission on Faith and Order, the Sixth World Conference took place from 24 to 28 October 2025 at the Logos Papal Center of the Coptic Orthodox Church, close to the St Bishoy Monastery at Wadi El Natrun, southwest of Alexandria, Egypt.
