Orange Shirt Day 2022

As Indigenous communities continue to search the grounds of former residential institutions for unmarked burial sites, we wear orange shirts to remember and honour Indigenous children who were taken from their communities and families to residential institutions. On Orange Shirt Day we also observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. For non-Indigenous Christians in particular, this is a time to reflect on their role in colonialism and the ongoing responsibility to make reparations.

Chinook Winds region is hosting two important events to help us in that reflection on September 30. At noon MT (2:00 p.m. EDT), please tune into the Chinook Winds Youtube channel for a time of commemoration and a moment of silence for those who died in the Residential School genocide.

At 8:00 p.m. MT (10:00 p.m. EDT), you can join a distinguished panel of ecumenical Indigenous Clergy voices from various denominations and spaces to discuss the history of residential schools, the impact of intergenerational trauma, and the ongoing role of Indigenous ministry in the church’s dialogue about reconciliation today. Everyone is invited! Register here.

The Canadian Health Coalition (the United Church is a member) is marking National Day of Truth and Reconciliation with a conversation with Dr. Alika Lafontaine, the new president of the Canadian Medical Association.

Host Anne Lagacé Dowson will discuss with Dr. Lafontaine, the president of the Canadian Medical Association, what decolonizing health care means to him and his award-winning work dedicated to eliminating discrimination and racism in health care.

Dr. Lafontaine is the first Indigenous president of the Canadian Medical Association. He is an anesthesiologist in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Registration is required for this opportunity to engage in the United Church’s commitments to right relations and anti-racism. For more information, contact Tracy Glynn at tglynn@healthcoalition.ca.
