For the first time in our denominations history, a US based theological institution, Payne Theological Seminary graduated 15 students in is Global Master of Divinity Degree Program. This graduation took place in Cape Town, South African at Bethel, Hazendal on Friday, September 2, 2022.

A packed church was on hand to witness the visionary leadership of Seminary President Dr. Michael J. Brown confer degrees and place academic hoods on the graduates. Academic Dean, Dr. Betty Holley, presented the candidates to the President and shared in their academic achievement.

The speaker for this special occasion was the Rev. Dr. Toni Belin-Ingram, Presiding Elder in the 6th Episcopal District. Her message to the graduates was most inspiring. Dr. Belin-Ingram also made history that day as she stood and spoke in the same church and pulpit as her late mother, Episcopal Supervisor Lucinda Crawford Belin, had also spoken some 10 years earlier to the very day.

General Officers Dr. Roderick Belin, President Publisher of the AME Sunday School Union and Mr. Marcus Henderson, Treasurer and CFO and wife Yolanda Henderson were present at the ceremony as well as Judicial Council Member and Secretary, Dr. Derek Anderson and wife Rev. Dr. Aimee Anderson. A delegation of seven individuals traveled with the Payne to this historical event including AME Director of Meeting Management Ms. Sharon Turner Blaylock and the US National Council of Churches Secretary, Dr. Kimberly Gordon Brooks.

As the graduates completed this major accomplishment, President Brown and Dean Holley shared that this will not be the last class to be part of the global education effort that Payne Seminary has created. Payne is officially on the soil of the 15th District and will be present to aid any and all persons who want theological education. Dr. Keith D.D. Lawrence, Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program at Payne, was also on hand to welcome graduates into the Doctor of Ministry program.
