God's Mission Our Gifts: Your September Mission & Service Stories and more!

Your August Mission & Service Stories

SEPTEMBER 4
A Church with an Extraordinary View

Canadian churches grace unique places: restaurants, store fronts, even movie theatres. Perhaps the most serene of all settings though is a national park. Situated in the heart of Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, a special United Church witnesses in a unique way to the majesty of God.

Agricultural Training in a Year of Unprecedented Hunger

The United Nations calls 2022 a “year of unprecedented hunger.” In just three years, the number of people facing food insecurity has jumped from 135,000,000 to 345,000,000. One of the ways your Mission & Service gifts are working to address hunger is by supporting agricultural training centres like the Asian Rural Institute, where Marita and Ester are among the 32 participants studying now.

End Racism. Build Peace.

It seems there’s a day set aside for everything under the sun: World Nerd Day, Pistachio Day and Squirrel Appreciation Day, just to name a few. There are so many special days that we can become immune to them. But when September 21 rolls around every year, it’s important to tune in. Here’s why.

SEPTEMBER 25
Women for Change Builds Climate Resiliency

An educational slide prepared by Women for Change shows their community-based work to develop climate resiliency.

Women for Change was established in 1992 in Zambia. Its long-standing partnership with the United Church stretches back to 1995. From the beginning, mobilizing communities to share ideas and best practices has been at the forefront of the work of Women for Change. Now, one of the key areas of work supported through Mission & Service is building climate resiliency, because women bear the brunt of climate change.

Congregational Stewardship/Generosity

This is your resource to help you grow generous disciples and gather the resources you need to transform yourselves, your community, and your world to be closer to God. Please modify and use these ideas in your context.

Is a Fall Giving Program in Your Future? (It should be!)

Taking time each year to focus on stewardship is an important spiritual practice in nurturing strong and generous disciples, which in turn helps your community of faith succeed in living out its purpose.

Step 1: Download the Program Book, Planning Guide and other resources you need to be successful from the bottom of the Congregational Giving Program – Do It Yourself webpage.

Step 2: Download the worship resources for your dates from the Stewardship in Worship webpage:

  •  28 Days to Thanksgiving: Offering Our Gratitude (September 12-October 10)
  • Season of Gratitude: World Communion Sunday to All Saints (October 3-October 31)
  • Discipleship IS Stewardship: Five Sundays for Any Time of the Year (you choose!)

Step 3: Find one or two other people to work with and make it happen.

Don’t be intimidated. Do whatever you can. Every step forward on your stewardship journey is progress! What matters is that you keep walking. You can do it!

Worship Without Stewardship Is Like Peanut Butter Without Jam

…it’s OK once in a while, but so much better together! Find the “jam” for your worship on our Stewardship in Worship webpage
  • Full worship liturgies, prayers, sermons and kids/youth ideas for most seasons of the church year.
  • Stewardship Seconds: short, pithy sayings that pack a punch, to help infiltrate stewardship thinking into your community of faith. Add them to newsletters, worship, announcements, webpages, wherever people gather!
  • Offering Introductions and Dedication Prayers: because the offering time in worship is NOT about collecting money! It is about growing generous disciples and stewards. These Introductions and Dedication prayers, for each Sunday of the year, will help.

Why We Give Is as Important as What We Give

Consider why you give as you reflect with the Rev. Dave Jagger, Community of Faith Stewardship Lead, in this article from the Broadview e-newsletter.
