Everyday ABC Conversation:

Multicultural Ministry in Your Congregation/Community

Join us for an Everyday ABC Conversation on Thursday, September 15, 2022 at 3:00pm EDT with presenters Rev. Kathryn Ray and Rev. Michael Ware.

Multi-cultural ministry can mean many things. It may mean pastoring a diverse congregation that gathers each Sunday. For others, multi-cultural ministry may mean serving those outside of your church in the local community. This workshop will offer reflection on identifying different cultures within your community, ministering with people from cultures other than your own, and facilitating community-building that bridges multiple cultures, whether in the church or beyond.

Rev. Dr. Robin Stoops to Serve in Special Assignment with Mission Resource Development

We are pleased to announce that the Rev. Dr. Robin Stoops has accepted an invitation to engage in a Special Assignment for the American Baptist Churches USA. Stoops will leave his region responsibilities as Executive Minister of the American Baptist Churches of Nebraska and come to ABCUSA to engage in the work of Mission Resource Development. He brings unique skills and denominational experience to emphasize mission giving in new ways that bring energy to our existing partnerships with donors and local churches to accelerate engagement in regional, national and international ministry and mission.

Dr. Stoops will officially assume the role of Interim Associate General Secretary for Mission Resource Development on October 15, 2022. The emphasis of this Special Assignment will be on exploring new ways of giving that match the refined focus of the ABCUSA Office of the General Secretary upon gathering the denomination, supporting regions and national organizations, and creating space for local and global dialogue. The interim nature of the role is in keeping with the current search for a new General Secretary.

“Robin’s energy is contagious and his experience with American Baptist Churches runs deep and wide. We are grateful that Robin has accepted this new assignment,” said General Secretary Dr. C. Jeff Woods.

American Baptists Advocate for Myanmar at International Religious Freedom Summit

American Baptist Churches USA recently co-sponsored a booth at the International Religious Freedom Summit (IRFS), along with MMBB Financial Services, International Ministries (IM), and the Regional Executive Ministers Council. The goal of the IRFS was to bring together a broad coalition that passionately supports religious freedom around the globe to address the issue of international religious freedom that touches every culture, nation, religion, and political system. At present, almost 80 percent of the world’s inhabitants live in countries where there are high levels of governmental or societal restrictions on religion, and restrictions have been steadily increasing for several years. American Baptists attending the event advocated for Myanmar and helped to share about the current plight faced by the people of Myanmar. The three-day event was held in Washington D.C., June 28 – June 30.

The Summit connected resources and advocates interested in religious freedom and highlighted the personal testimonies of survivors of religious persecutions and restrictions on religious freedom. The American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) also helped to sponsor a table in the display area, working with the Chin Association of Maryland.

ABCUSA will continue sharing the dilemma of the people of Myanmar during a workshop that will be held at the World Council of Churches (WCC) meeting in Germany, September 1, 2022. The goal of the workshop is to expose human rights abuses, attacks on Christians and Muslims/Rohyingas and advocate and build a network to support federal democracy in Myanmar and the National Unity Government.
