Celebrating First Nations children in this week's UC National News 3-9 August

Celebrating a new beginning

As we celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (NATSI) Children’s Day tomorrow, the Uniting Church reaffirms its commitment to help build a strong future for First Nations children.

In a shared statement from the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress (UAICC), UnitingCare Australia and the Uniting Church Assembly, UAICC Interim National Chairperson Rev Mark Kickett encouraged Uniting Church communities to celebrate and commit to a new beginning and hope-filled future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

Children's Day falls as the Prime Minister this week outlined plans to enshrine a First Nations Voice into the constitution. We encourage people to engage with and build support for an enduring and constitutionally guaranteed Voice to Parliament - a way we can both honour the place of First Nations people at the heart of the nation and help build a strong future for First Nations children.

UAICC National Executive member Alison Overeem has provided a reflection for NATSI Children's Day and two young Congress members reflected on the theme, "My Dreaming, My Future". Nichola Overeem says,

“I dream for a world where children can grow up strong and be
proud of themselves and their identity. Where they are nurtured,
respected and empowered to be who they are. Dreaming for me is
a holistic approach to viewing someone’s identity and empowering
them to shape their own story. Where their cultural, spiritual, and
emotional selves are nourished through the stories of their
ancestors.”

This week we kick off a new series based on the strategic priority of the Assembly focused on our Identity as a Uniting Church. Rev Heewon Chang from the Growing in Faith Circle shares an invitation to the Uniting Church to think deeply about who we are and where we come from. Reflecting as a non-white migrant on the Basis of Union 50 years after it was first written, Heewon says despite its flaws, the founding document still has much to say about who we are and our calling to be a church perched on the margins, committed to serving the world.
