E-ssentials: Results of Remit 1, Pilgrimage for Gaza, Earth Week Resources, and more.

Results of the Vote on Remit 1

Moderator and Indigenous Hands

The votes have now been counted! Remit 1: Establishing an Autonomous National Indigenous Organization has passed. What happens now? As is the case with all Category 3 Remits, if a remit has been approved by a majority of all the regional councils, the General Council must decide to enact it. The decision on enacting the remit will take place at the Annual Meeting of General Council, on October 19, 2024. When the remit has been enacted, the change will be included in the next edition of The Manual. (The process for remits is outlined in the United Church Manual, in section F, on pages 108-111.)

On the General Council 44 website, you can find more detailed information about the remit result, as well as a statement from the National Indigenous Council in response to the vote results.

Join a Global Pilgrimage for Gaza

It is now more than six months since the terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023. In the bombardment by Israel, millions of Gazans are starving, displaced, killed and imprisoned, crowded into a small area, and currently under threat of further warfare. Partners in Palestine and Israel cry out for an end to the decades-long occupation of Palestine and blockade of Gaza. We seek to be in solidarity.

The Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage held during Lent has been expanded into April and May, including an ecumenical pilgrimage and prayer vigil on May 22 in Ottawa.

Join with others in Canada and globally in prayerful solidarity. Read our full news announcement to find out more about how you and your community of faith can participate by praying and advocating for Palestine and joining or hosting a local pilgrimage.

Host or Attend a Faithful Footprints Retrofit Tour

The United Church of Canada’s Faithful Footprints program is hosting another Retrofit Tour series this Earth Week as part of the 60+ United Church of Canada events in Together For the Love of Creation Earth Week 2024 (April 21–28).

Faithful Footprints Retrofit Tours are in-person events hosted by past and current Faithful Footprints program participants. The tours are an opportunity for communities of faith to celebrate the building upgrades they have achieved thanks to the support of The United Church of Canada’s one-of-a-kind retrofit grant program and a chance for others to get a closer look at their energy conservation and decarbonization renovations.

Your Mission and Service Stories: Supporting a Rights-Based Approach to Growing Food

Hands opening a bean seed pod

In a rural community in El Salvador, Mission and Service partner the Association of Economic and Social Development Santa Marta (ADES) works with farmers on an agroecology project that benefits the land and water because it recycles nutrients back into the soil. It also reduces production costs, lessening the financial burden on rural farmers. Your gifts to Mission and Service help support ADES’ agroecology project. Thank you for your generosity!
