Easter Message 2023: Thinking Outside the Tomb
As the world limps out of the COVID pandemic, the ravages of the pandemic have prised open already existing, deeply embedded injustices. Globally, we are acutely aware of the deep inequalities of class, gender, and race that divide humanity and prevent us from living the abundant life that God calls us into. As we resist the urge to return to what was “normal,” we instead try to re-create a world that is founded on justice. It is in this context of not returning to normal that we are called to think outside the tomb.
This Easter calls us into a fresh start. While the women in the life of Jesus never deserted him the disciples have a different story to tell. In the gospel according to John, the first man to reach the empty tomb in this story does not have his name mentioned, but we can make a fairly good guess is the disciple John; being a younger man he was able to outrun Peter and reach the tomb first. We must remember that this was the same John who along with his brother James asked Jesus whether they would be allowed to sit at the right and left hand of Jesus when he entered into his “glory.” At that time Jesus had asked the both of them whether they would be willing to drink the cup that he was going to drink from and whether they would be willing to be baptized with his baptism. Both had willingly agreed at that time but when, the time of trial had come both disciples had shrunk from the task that they had promised. And what of Peter? His story is even more familiar, not only did he desert Jesus in his time of need but also was the one who openly denied Jesus.
One can’t help but wonder what these two disciples were thinking when they were running to that tomb; no doubt their minds were filled with disbelief, expectation, and excitement. But I also believe that they must have had that dread of having to now confront the person who they let down. It is significant though that in all the recorded meetings that they had with Jesus after his resurrection this is never an issue. In their meetings with the risen Christ the disciples and Peter and John in particular are offered a new beginning, a fresh start. +++
Mensaje de Pascua 2023: Pensar fuera de la tumba
Mientras el mundo intenta salir rengueando de la pandemia del COVID, ésta ha abierto de par en par las puertas que ponen en evidencia las injusticias prexistentes y profundamente arraigadas. A nivel global, tenemos plena consciencia de las profundas desigualdades de clase, de género y de raza que dividen a la humanidad y que nos impiden vivir la vida abundante a la que Dios nos llama. Resistiendo el impulso de volver a aquello que considerábamos "normal", tratamos en cambio de recrear un mundo basado en la justicia. Es este contexto de no-regreso a la normalidad el que nos desafía a pensar fuera de la tumba.
Esta Pascua nos convoca a un nuevo comienzo. Mientras las mujeres en la vida de Jesús nunca lo abandonaron, los discípulos varones tienen una historia diferente que contar. En el Evangelio según San Juan, no se menciona el nombre del primer hombre que llegó a la tumba vacía, pero podemos suponer que se trata del discípulo Juan; al ser más joven, pudo dejar atrás a Pedro y llegar primero a la tumba. Debemos recordar que este fue el mismo Juan que, junto a su hermano Santiago, le preguntó a Jesús si se les permitiría sentarse a su derecha y a su izquierda cuando entrara en su "gloria." En aquel momento Jesús les había preguntado a ambos si estaban dispuestos a beber el cáliz del cual él iba a beber y si estaban dispuestos a ser bautizados con su bautismo. Ambos respondieron afirmativamente y de buen grado en aquel momento, pero cuando llegó la hora de la prueba, los dos discípulos rehuyeron el compromiso que habían asumido. ¿Y Pedro? Su historia nos resulta aún más familiar, no sólo abandonó a Jesús en su momento de necesidad, sino que también fue él quien negó abiertamente a Jesús.
No podemos evitar preguntarnos en qué estaban pensando estos dos discípulos mientras corrían hacia aquella tumba; sin duda sus mentes estaban llenas de incredulidad, expectación y emoción. Pero también creo que debieron sentir el temor de tener que enfrentarse a la persona a la que habían defraudado. Resulta significativo, no obstante, que en todos los encuentros con Jesús que han quedado registrados luego de su resurrección esto nunca aparezca como un problema. En sus encuentros con Cristo resucitado, a los discípulos, y a Pedro y a Juan en particular, se les ofrece la posibilidad de un nuevo comienzo.+++
Message de Pâques 2023 : Penser en dehors du tombeau
Alors que le monde se remet difficilement de la pandémie de COVID, les ravages de la pandémie ont mis à jour des injustices déjà existantes et profondément ancrées. Globalement, nous sommes très conscients des profondes inégalités de classe, de genre et de race qui divisent l'humanité et nous empêchent de vivre la vie abondante à laquelle Dieu nous appelle. En résistant à l'envie de revenir à ce qui était "normal", nous essayons au contraire de recréer un monde fondé sur la justice. C'est dans ce contexte d'un non-retour à la normale que nous sommes appelés à penser en dehors du tombeau.
La fête de Pâques nous invite à prendre un nouveau départ. Si les femmes de la vie de Jésus ne l'ont jamais abandonné, les disciples ont une histoire différente à raconter. Dans l'évangile selon Jean, le nom du premier homme à atteindre le tombeau vide n'est pas mentionné, mais nous pouvons supposer qu'il s'agit du disciple Jean. Étant plus jeune, il a pu devancer Pierre et atteindre le tombeau en premier. Nous devons nous rappeler que c'est ce même Jean qui, avec son frère Jacques, a demandé à Jésus s'il leur serait permis de s'asseoir à la droite et à la gauche de Jésus lorsqu'il entrerait dans sa "gloire". À l'époque, Jésus leur avait demandé à tous deux s'ils accepteraient de boire la coupe dont il allait boire et s'ils accepteraient d'être baptisés de son baptême. Tous deux avaient accepté volontiers à l'époque, mais lorsque le temps de l'épreuve est venu, les deux disciples ont reculé devant la tâche qu'ils avaient promise. Qu'en est-il de Pierre ? Son histoire est encore plus connue : non seulement il a abandonné Jésus au moment où il avait besoin de lui, mais c'est aussi lui qui l'a ouvertement renié.
On ne peut s'empêcher de se demander à quoi pensaient ces deux disciples lorsqu'ils couraient vers le tombeau ; il ne fait aucun doute que leur esprit était rempli d'incrédulité, d'attente et d'excitation. Mais je crois aussi qu'ils ont dû être effrayés à l'idée de devoir affronter la personne qu'ils avaient laissé tomber. Il est toutefois frappant de constater que dans toutes les rencontres mentionnées qu'ils ont eues avec Jésus après sa résurrection, cette question n'a jamais été abordée. Dans leurs rencontres avec le Christ ressuscité, les disciples, et en particulier Pierre et Jean, se voient offrir un nouveau commencement, un nouveau départ.+++
Osterbotschaft 2023: Über das Grab hinaus denken
Während die Welt langsam aus der COVID-Pandemie herausschleicht, haben die Verwüstungen der Pandemie bereits bestehende, tief verwurzelte Ungerechtigkeiten aufgedeckt. Weltweit sind wir uns der tiefen Ungleichheiten in Bezug auf Klasse, Geschlecht und Rasse bewusst, die die Menschheit spalten und uns daran hindern, das Leben in Fülle zu leben, zu dem Gott uns ruft. Wenn wir dem Drang widerstehen, zu dem zurückzukehren, was "normal" war, versuchen wir, eine Welt zu schaffen, die auf Gerechtigkeit beruht. In diesem Kontext der Nicht-Rückkehr zur Normalität sind wir aufgerufen, über das Grab hinaus zu denken.
Dieses Osterfest ruft uns zu einem Neuanfang auf. Während die Frauen Jesus zu seinen Lebzeiten nie im Stich ließen, haben die Jünger eine andere Geschichte zu erzählen. Im Johannesevangelium wird der Name des ersten Mannes, der das leere Grab erreichte, nicht genannt, aber wir können mit ziemlicher Sicherheit davon ausgehen, dass es sich um den Jünger Johannes handelte; als jüngerer Mann war er in der Lage, Petrus zu überholen und das Grab zuerst zu erreichen. Wir müssen uns daran erinnern, dass dies derselbe Johannes war, der zusammen mit seinem Bruder Jakobus Jesus fragte, ob sie zur Rechten und zur Linken Jesu sitzen dürften, wenn er in seine "Herrlichkeit" eintrete. Damals hatte Jesus die beiden gefragt, ob sie auch bereit wären, den Kelch zu trinken, aus dem er trinken würde, und ob sie bereit wären, mit seiner Taufe getauft zu werden. Beide hatten damals bereitwillig zugestimmt, aber als die Zeit der Prüfung gekommen war, sind beide Jünger vor dem zurückgeschreckt, was sie versprochen hatten. Und was ist mit Petrus? Seine Geschichte ist sogar noch bekannter, denn er ließ Jesus nicht nur in seiner Not im Stich, sondern war auch derjenige, der Jesus offen verleugnete.
Man kann nicht umhin, sich zu fragen, was diese beiden Jünger dachten, als sie zum Grab liefen; zweifellos waren ihre Gedanken von Unglauben, Erwartung und Aufregung erfüllt. Aber ich glaube auch, dass sie sich davor gefürchtet haben müssen, der Person gegenüberzustehen, die sie im Stich gelassen haben. Es ist jedoch bezeichnend, dass in allen aufgezeichneten Begegnungen, die sie mit Jesus nach seiner Auferstehung hatten, dies nie zur Sprache kommt. In ihren Begegnungen mit dem auferstandenen Christus wird den Jüngern und insbesondere Petrus und Johannes ein neuer Anfang, ein Neubeginn angeboten. |
