The Courageous Witness of Women in the Confessing Church

The Courageous Witness of Women in the Confessing Church

When Hitler became Germany’s Führer in 1933, Jews were soon endangered, and the church was faced with great challenges. Young pastor, Albrecht Goes, like others, was distressed. He asked his teacher, the Jewish scholar, Martin Buber, “What are we Christians to do now?” Buber’s answer was, “Get involved! Do not stay on the side-lines.”

At our upcoming conference on March 7-9, Martha Burnett will lead a workshop on some courageous women of the Confessing Church who did not stay on the side-lines, but who risked their lives as they sought to be faithful to Jesus Christ. The courageous lives and witness of these women are a source of inspiration and encouragement for all who seek to be faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ today.

Martha was born and raised in Germany. Her father was a Lutheran pastor near the North Sea. She studied English and Evangelische Theologie at the University of Saarbrücken and became a junior high school teacher near Stuttgart. She met her husband, Richard, in 1986. They married in 1988 and moved to the United States in 1989. She has served as a pastor’s wife in Tennessee, New Jersey, North and South Carolina. She has also been a church secretary, college instructor of German, and has been an administrative assistant for Theology Matters since 2016. Martha and Richard have four children and one grandchild. She is writing a book on the women of the Confessing Church during National Socialism.
