E-ssentials: Korea Peace Appeal, Final Call for Nominations, and more.

100 Million Signatures for Peace

70 years is enough. End the Korean War.

That’s the message of the recently launched Korea Peace Appeal, a global campaign that seeks to collect 100 million signatures by 2023, the 70th anniversary of the armistice. The United Church of Canada has been challenged by our Korean partners to add 10,000 Canadian signatures to the petition. Your support through Mission & Service actively supports peace-making in Korea. Signing this petition is another way to help.

We also invite you to join us for "A Call to Prayer and Action for Peace in Korea," a special livestream worship service with the Rev. Eun-kyung Kim, Moderator of The Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea, at 9:00 a.m. EDT, 27 April 2022, on The United Church of Canada YouTube channel.

The invasion of Ukraine is costing precious lives and creating a humanitarian crisis as people flee to safety. Over 3 million people, displaced from their homes, are seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. Many have lost friends, loved ones, and property; struggle to meet their basic needs; and face an uncertain future. United Church Mission & Service partners are responding to the rapidly unfolding crisis—visit our website to find out how you can show your support and make a gift.

United Church Bookstore: For the Sake of the Common Good

Bringing together internationally recognized figures, national leaders, and local heroes who have been influenced by Lois Wilson’s practical Christianity, progressive values, and commitment to ending oppression in all forms, For the Sake of the Common Good acknowledges Lois's inspiring legacy while taking on the important task of continuing her work. With an afterword by United Church General Secretary Michael Blair, the book contains pieces by a number of other United Church folk, including former Moderator Stan McKay.

The essays featured urge us to think about the many ways we can work toward the common good: by welcoming refugees, developing ecologically sustainable ways of life, repairing relations with Indigenous peoples, protecting the rights of LGBTQIIA+ and Two-Spirit people and all who are oppressed, defending political prisoners, and respecting religious rights and the place of faith in public life. In such ways, we can restore right relations with the Earth and with each other. Pick up your copy today!
