TCR Breaking News: Transition of the Right Reverend Linwood Rideout III, Retired Presiding Bishop of the Union American Methodist Episcopal Church
This morning the Union American Methodist Episcopal Church (UAME) announced the death of retired Presiding Bishop Linwood Rideout.III. Prior to his election, he served in several pulpits including Mother UAME Church in Wilmington Delaware. At the time of his retirement, he was the Presiding Prelate of the 1st and 4th Episcopal Districts as well as a member of the Pan-Methodist Commission. He was active in ecumenical and civic affairs throughout the state of Delaware. Bishop Rideout delivered the benediction at the Ecumenical Service of the 2016 AME Church General Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Please be in prayer for his family and the entire UAME Church.
The Union American Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in June 1813 by Rev. Peter Spencer with black members of Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church, Wilmington, Delaware, It was originally called the Union Church of Africans, but in 1852 was changed to the present name. It is comprised of five (5) Episcopal Districts and fifty-three (53) churches located in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Liberia.
The Christian Recorder is the official newspaper of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the oldest continuously produced publication by persons of African descent.
