TCR Breaking News: AME Clergywoman to become Black female Chaplain Colonel in the US Army; Promotion ceremony today at 3:30 (EST)
Chaplain Monica Johnson-Lawson's frocking ceremony is today, September 2, 2020, at 3:30 (EST). She will be the first African American Woman in the 245-year history of the Army Chaplaincy to be promoted to the rank of Colonel.

Chaplain (Lieutenant Colonel) Monica R. Johnson-Lawson is a native of Five Points, Alabama, and is a graduate of the Atlanta Public School System. She currently serves as the Deputy Pentagon Chaplain, Washington, DC.

Her civilian education includes Bachelor of Arts in Child Development, Spelman College (1992) Master of Divinity with a concentration in The Psychology of Religion and Pastoral Care (2001), and Clinical Pastoral Education Internship at the Ingalls Center for Pastoral Care (2001-2), Baptist Health System Birmingham, Alabama.

Her military education and training include Basic Training, Fort Jackson, South Carolina.(1988) Advanced Individual Training,(74D10), Fort Gordon, Georgia (1989) Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Spelman College/ Georgia Institute of Technology (1989-92), Signal Officer Basic Course (1993), the Chaplain Officers Basic Course (2005), and the Chaplain Captains Career Course (2008), Command and General Staff College (2015) and the Resource Manager Course (2017) She served as the Battalion Chaplain for the 11th Transportation Battalion, Fort Story, Virginia (May 2005-June 2008) and the 1/61 Infantry Regiment, Basic Training Unit, Fort Jackson, SC (January 2009-October 2010). She also served as the Brigade Chaplain for the USA Recruiting Command’s 2nd Recruiting Brigade, Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama (October 2010-December 2011). She is a 2013 graduate of the US Army Chaplain’s Family Life Training Program, at Webster University, Fort Bragg, NC, where she earned a Master of Arts degree in Family Life Counseling. Upon completion of her training, she was assigned to Fort Bliss, Texas, and served as the Fort Bliss Garrison Family Life Chaplain and the Assistant Pastor of the Fort Bliss Gospel Service. She was later assigned to Fort Knox, Kentucky where she served as the Deputy Command Chaplain-East, Cadet Command. Her most recent assignment was as Deputy Garrison Chaplain/Resource Manager at Fort Gordon, Georgia.

CH (LTC) Johnson-Lawson is an ordained elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church where she is affectionately known as “Rev. Monica.”  She is married to Dr. Maurice L. Lawson, Pastor of Living Faith Cathedral, Greenwood, Mississippi and they have one daughter, Jiana age 16. She loves God, for He is the never-ending source of her strength.
