“Many blessings to many people have grown out of Altmann’s commitment to the ecumenical movement,” said Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, current moderator of the WCC central committee.

“During his term as moderator of the WCC central committee from 2006 to 2013 he has given important inspiration to the discussions on urgent questions such as global economic justice, ecological transformation, and strategies to overcome violence”, he said. “May the blessings of God be with him now and in the future”, added Bedford-Strohm.

A prominent Latin American theologian with a vast academic production, Altmann also served as President of the Latin American Council of Churches between 1995-2001 and President of the Evangelical Church of the Lutheran Confession in Brazil from 2002 to 2010.
