| Week of Prayer for Christian Unity |
|
We are in the midst of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which runs through January 25. The theme for this year's week is "Do good; seek justice." This simple call is from Isaiah 1:17 (NRSVue).
Today's prayer focus is: do justice, love mercy, walk humbly. It is taken from the familiar scripture in Micah 6:8. We join our prayers with Christians around the world as we explore how learning to do right requires the decision to engage in self-reflection.
The materials for this year were developed by a team from Minnesota, including the Minnesota Council of Churches. Their work began amid the pain caused by the ongoing trauma of the murder of George Floyd and the stress of waiting for a verdict in the trial of the officer convicted in Floyd's murder. The DHS Center for Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, DHS Office of Partnership and Engagement, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are co-hosting a webinar to provide information and resources on adversely impacted communities after disasters and how to identify the risk factors that may lead to human trafficking.
The webinar will also include information on how to better prepare faith and community groups, first responders, and emergency managers to recognize social and emotional impacts caused by disasters and the importance of local partnerships to prevent exploitation and respond to survivors' needs. Federal resources about how to report suspected incidences of human trafficking will be provided.
