And Are We Yet Alive!

Despite twinges of travelers apprehension, we have come through many airports to join with those we haven’t seen since 2016: handshakes, fist bumps, elbow bumps and tentative or warm hugs. While masks make recognition difficult, there is the freedom to greet the many people you pass by. We are emotionally safe, and among friends, we know and don’t know. We are united across districts. We are the AME Church! And no matter what--it is as it will always be---a re-grouping of our every-four-years friends.

Opening Business Session of the Historic 51st Session of the General Conference

We knew it would not be just business as usual because the agenda set forth would reflect the Lord’s business agenda on the heels of a worldwide crisis that has left us grateful to be alive and hopeful for a new beginning that will encompass the new normal coupled with a majestic presence and performance of eternal glory.

HBCU Night and Concert

The virtual concert featured the musical talents of the Paul Quinn College Choir, J..J. Hairston and other solo artists who led us in a night of praise and worship. Bishop Wilfred Messiah delivered an encouraging word entitled “God Will Make Your Iron to Float” from 2 Kings 6:1-7 which focused on how God will make a way even in times of great obstacles. Interspersed between the music and Word, the bishops, college presidents and alumni gave a clarion call to financially support and envision a greater future for the AME scholastic institutions.

The Digital Divide and the General Conference

The GC2021 has fully exposed the true realities of the Gaps that exist between Demographics and Regions in the USA and the African continent. Resistance for GC2021 to go 100% virtual was a clear indication that the church did not prepare adequately for the obtaining digital divide. In spite of technical advice for the church not to proceed with in-person gathering, we insisted went on swimming against the current of Covid-19. Simply stated, we did not prepare adequately and we failed to invest heavily in the much-needed necessary Information and Communication Technology ICT’s.
