Emancipation Day Resources
The World Council of Churches recently presented an ecumenical webinar on "Acting Together in Canadian Churches to Observe the International Decade for People of African Descent." From this webinar, an ecumenical group was formed, who quickly discerned that producing a video for the first National Emancipation Day (August 1, 2021) would be a great endeavour. Thanks to all those who participated! We hope you enjoy the celebration of the first national emancipation day.
In addition, The Black Clergy Network of The United Church of Canada will present a panel discussion on "Challenging Colonial Legacies through the Commemoration of Emancipation." This conversation will livestream on The Black Clergy Network's YouTube channel on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. EDT / 4:00 p.m. PDT.
Featuring Dr. Dian McCallum, Dr. Rinaldo Walcott, Rev. Dr. Japhet Ndhlovu, Rev. Dr. Steed Davidson, and Rev. Sadekie Lyttle-Forbes. All are invited!
Young Black Scholarship Program The Young Black Scholarship Program project has just concluded its research phase on Black experiences in Canadian churches. The project is part of the United Church's commitment to the UN International Decade for People of African Descent, and the researchers are excited to share what they learned and be part of animating our church’s continued effort to become an anti-racist church.
Would it be possible for your church to host an event together? It would include theme-centred creative presentations from the findings of our researchers, which would then be the basis for interactive conversations with those attending the event.
If your church is interested in hosting an event, please contact Emo Yango at 416-231-7680 x4522, or email eyango@united-church.ca.
Your Generosity Matters: COVID-19 Won’t End until It Ends for Everyone
“Visible minority” is the term often used to refer to non-Indigenous racialized people. Think about it for a minute. In reality, 80 percent of people around the world are of African, Asian, Latin American, and Arab descent. They are not the minority―they are the global majority.
And yet, only 1 percent of this global majority has been vaccinated against COVID-19. In fact, most won’t be vaccinated until 2023/24.
We need to take action now to ensure that everyone around the globe has access to vaccines. Because the COVID-19 crisis won’t end for anyone until it ends for everyone. Find out what you can do to help.[Photo credit: iStock.com/rvimages]
