E-ssentials: Pride Month Resources, Life as A Mission Co-Worker in Korea, A Webinar with the Rev. Dr. Cheri DiNovo, and more

Pride Month Resources

Noah Janosch Brown is a 20-year-old queer Black artist and one of the participants in the Young Black Scholars Program, part of the United Church's commitment to the International Decade for People of African Descent. Read the blog post about processing traumatic experiences through art and finding safe space to create work in a United Church basement.

There is also a new prayer for Pride Month written by Jordan Sullivan, a trans man and Conversion Therapy Survivor.

On June 27, there will be a candlelight AIDS vigil hosted on the Indigenous Ministries Facebook page, and on June 28 folks can join a webinar intended to provide attendees with some of the basic knowledge of and vocabulary for building relationships with and among Two-Spirit people.

When: Wednesday, June 23, 7:00 p.m. ET / 4:00 p.m. PT

Get a glimpse of life in Korea as a United Church mission co-worker! John Egger first arrived in Seoul in 2018, and he is eager to share his experiences with United Church folk who may be interested in mission. John hopes that this event will "offer an opportunity to reflect on the richness of intercultural encounter for discerning God’s call to us to be agents of love, justice, and peace in the world."

You can register for the webinar here.

It promises to be a very lively discussion—find out more, and register.

Cheri has just released a book entitled The Queer Evangelist: A Socialist Clergy's Radically Honest Tale, and it's available for purchase from the United Church Bookstore (currently at $5 off!). You can also get free Canadian shipping with orders over $50 with promo code DINOVO.

Your Generosity Matters: Every Person Is a Superhero: Esbikenh’s Story

Photo of a smiling Esbikenh, wearing a Blue Jays ball cap.

Esbikenh was once a junior kindergarten teacher. While he grew up knowing his ancestral language, Anishinaabemowin (pronounced Ah-nish-nah-BEM-win), sadly the children he taught didn’t. “One day I turned on YouTube and saw superhero videos. I thought, ‘Why not make these videos and we will just have all the superheroes speak in Anishinaabemowin?’” says Esbikenh. Knowing how important learning Anishinaabemowin is to the children he once taught, Esbikenh applied for a project grant from the United Church. The Healing Fund, which is nearly entirely funded through Mission & Service, addresses the ongoing impacts of the residential school system.
