Presbyterians Today | Making Change Happen

JULY/AUGUST 2020 ISSUE

Making change happen

Our world, our nation, our communities, our churches, our families have witnessed massive disruption and change in the span of just a few short months. From the COVID-19 pandemic to antiracism protests all over the U.S. and around the globe, life today scarcely resembles what we all took for “normal” back in March. In the face of this paradigm shift, how are congregations serving their flock? This issue of Presbyterians Today features some important reflections for our version of a Brave New World. Here are just two:
Crisis & Creativity celebrates ingenuity. Times of crisis can be catalysts for great creativity. Read how church leaders and members are setting their imaginations free and exploring new expressions of faith.
Community organizing can make change happen. Learn why bringing about dramatic social change takes more than the efforts of a single congregation. Churches and other partners must work together to uncover and understand the issues their neighbors face — and organize together to address the injustices.

Listening to the needs of the marginalized: struggling to do the right thing

A congregation agonized over whether to shut down a construction project to protect workers’ health — but thereby denying them their wages.

How the COVID-19 pandemic brought healing to a centuries-old racial wound

Two North Carolina congregations — one historically white, the other black — take steps to heal 150 years of racial wounds by worshiping together virtually.

Handling church money brings great responsibilities

Faithful financial practices to start, or revisit, today

Matthew 25-Actively engaged in the world
The Matthew 25 invitation was officially launched in April of 2019. Over a year later there are more than 530 churches, groups and mid councils that have made the commitment to become a Matthew 25 church and work towards building congregational vitality, dismantling structural racism and eradicating systemic poverty.
