Weekly Outlook - PC(USA) joins lawsuit challenging ICE

Dear readers,

"Rose ... the same Rose from the emails?"

The woman's eyes flicked from my APCE nametag to my face, a grin of recognition spreading across her face — a grin I couldn't help but match.

"One in the same," I replied, leaning a little closer over the table between us, piled with Outlook magazines, samples and chocolate.

Hers was a small comment, but it held a lot of affirmation for me. I began writing these email intros a year and a half ago in the hopes of pulling the curtain back to show our staff's work and personality. I know from the stats that readers engage with them, but it was a validation to hear it in person.

I think it's often tempting to view publishers like the Outlook as disembodied entities prone to making mistakes in their reporting, that don't offer the right products, that promote an ideology misaligned with your own, or that don't publish the stories you want to read about. The vast majority of the notes we receive are from people who are upset with us — and this makes sense. Humans are more likely to vocalize frustration than appreciation. We value all feedback and always seek to be better. However, the notes of appreciation feel extra sweet.

As a small team, we work hard because we believe in the work of creating space for dialogue, of offering needed resources, of helping readers find meaning in the world, of reporting on denominational news. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is: thank you for reading. Thank you for caring. We curate our content for you every week. I hope it benefits and blesses you.

Peace,
