The Christian Recorder - Rev. Dr. Ronald Slaughter named as Vice-Chair of New Jersey State Parole Board

The Rev. Dr. Ronald Slaughter, senior pastor at Saint James AME Church, has been designated to serve as the vice chairman of the New Jersey State Parole Board.

Parole Board Chairman Samuel J. Plumeri Jr. said Slaughter perfectly fits the role.

“I look forward to having Vice Chairman Slaughter working next to me to oversee the dedicated law enforcement and civilian staff of the State Parole Board, which has a steadfast commitment toward ensuring public safety and promoting successful and sustainable community reintegration,” Plumeri said in a statement to TAPinto Newark on Tuesday, Sept. 26.

Slaughter, sworn to a six-year term on the board in 2019, is in his fifth year on the board. People convicted of crimes who are up for parole must go before two of the 14 board members.

“I look forward to working next to Chairman Plumeri and gleaning from his decades of leadership in the law enforcement community as well as continuing my work to ensure that the parole process is fair for all persons according to the code and standards of parole,” Slaughter said.

Slaughter has been a supporter of New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and his administration because he believe he has "value and substance to contribute to the position".

“Since his nomination to the New Jersey State Parole Board in 2019, Rev. Ron Slaughter has demonstrated a sincere commitment to serving the people of New Jersey while working to transform and modernize our parole practices,"  Gov. Murphy said.

“As we work to further reduce New Jersey’s prison population and recidivism rates while recognizing rehabilitation and supporting our returning residents, I am extremely confident in his ability to provide insightful guidance and steady leadership as vice chair of the Parole Board,” Murphy said.

The reverend is also being talked about as a replacement for 11th District Democrat U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill should she be appointed to fill U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez’s seat, if the embattled senator resigns.

A Florida native, Slaughter became the youngest minister at Saint James AME Church in 2011. He’s been preaching since 1999 and received his doctorate from Wesley Theological Seminary.

Slaughter serves as deputy director of Community Relations for the Newark Public Safety Department, a role to which he was appointed by Mayor Ras J. Baraka. In this role, he has organized community meetings to discuss the department’s federal consent decree.
