Members of the Circolo San Placido devotional society carry a float with a new statue of the 6th century Saint Placid, Sunday, Sept. 3, 2023, in Easton, Pennsylvania. The saint is the patron of Castel di Lucio in Sicily, the hometown of a large number of families that migrated to Pennsylvania in the 1890s. The procession included hymn-singing, refreshments, a brass band and veneration of a relic of the saint. The society’s previous statue, used since 1917, developed a crack at the beginning of COVID-19 that made it unsafe to carry. Reader submitted photo by Richard Mammana

Three young people man the “Switchboard,” a telephone crisis intervention center, in San Francisco in 1971. Centers like this around the world filled the gap between persons with needs and the agencies established to fill those needs. Switchboard was started by a group of concerned citizens, but churches started centers in many cities. An organization called Contact Teleministry was established to coordinate the various church-sponsored telephone centers. RNS archive photo by Don Rutledge.
