Presiding Elder Ronald E. Braxton and Rev. Dr. Marie Phillips Braxton Retirement Announcement

Presiding Elder Ronald E. Braxton and
Rev. Dr. Marie Phillips Braxton
Retirement Announcement

The Word of God admonishes us to render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due…honor to whom honor is due (Romans 13:7). Beyond a doubt, the Rev. Dr. Ronald E. Braxton, Presiding Elder of the Potomac District of the Washington Conference in the Second Episcopal District and his queenly wife and partner in ministry, the Rev. Dr. Marie Phillips Braxton, are not only due, but well deserving of tribute and honor. For 100 years of collective ministry, they have been faithful, committed, and exemplary servants of the Kingdom, and it is with deep gratitude and appreciation for the gifts that they have been to the Body of Christ that we invite you to celebrate these esteemed Christian leaders on Friday, April 21, 2023, at 7:00 pm at Kingdom Fellowship AME Church in Beltsville, Maryland. Please note a small block of rooms have been reserved at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center located at 3501 University Blvd East, Hyattsville, Maryland 20783. Please contact them directly at (301) 985-7300 to secure your reservations. Be sure to indicate that your reservation is part of the Elder Braxton Celebration block of rooms.

Presiding Elder Braxton has been honored to serve as the Presiding Elder of the premier Potomac District in the Washington Conference for the past nine years. Under his leadership, the District, consisting of over 40 churches, has flourished greatly; churches have been added/birthed, souls have been saved, and the Kingdom has been enlarged. Elder Braxton has truly been a Pastor to his Pastors and has led with integrity, wisdom, and innovation. Before he was appointed the Presiding Elder, Dr. Braxton served as the illustrious pastor of the historic Metropolitan AME Church, the National Cathedral of African Methodism, for 13 years, having before that served some 47 years as the senior pastor of Bethel AME Church in Lynn, MA; Allen AME Church in Baltimore, MD; Emanuel AME Church in Portsmouth, VA; and Waters AME Church in Baltimore, MD.

In 1982, history was made with the ordination of the Rev. Dr. Marie Murphy Phillips Braxton as the first woman ordained an Itinerant Elder in the Washington Conference of the Second Episcopal District. Dr. Marie has been an invaluable source of wisdom and mentoring to countless women in ministry, having served as the interim pastor of the Holley Grove AME Church in Windsor, VA; senior pastor of Bethel AME Church in Port Deposit, MD; Adams Chapel AME Church in Baltimore, MD; and Campfield AME Church in Baltimore, MD; as well as assistant pastor at Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, DC. Dr. Marie is also a former reporter and editor of the AFRO-AMERICAN NEWSPAPER, INC, and a retired teacher and counselor following 30 years in public school education. She is also the owner of Lovely Lavender…Plus, a ministry whose proceeds support Washington Conference homeless ministries and the Weaver School in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo.

In 2017, the Potomac District-Washington Conference, along with clergy and laity from across the Connection, family and friends, celebrated 50 years of ministry of the Rev. Dr. Ronald Eugene Braxton under the theme “Steadfast and Unmovable.” On April 21st, we will again celebrate the Steadfast and Unmovable, Faithful, and Abounding ministry of these amazing servants, Braxton from the Second and Rev. Dr. Marie Phillips Braxton.
