UC National News 23 Feb - 2 March - Ready for Lent Event, Concerns for Ukraine, Praying for Brazil, Seasonal workers find community and more

Creating a world with more hope

With the beginning of Lent just a week away, now is the time to join UnitingWorld in their invitation to reflect on and rededicate yourself to Christ's compassion and justice by joining Lent Event!

Since 2009, Lent Event has raised over 3 million dollars for people living in the Pacific, Asia and Africa through long-term partnerships with the Uniting Church in Australia.

Reflect on what it means to be a good global neighbour through the LentEvent Bible Study and sign up to raise funds for clean water, education or climate action.

Check out their great action ideas for giving or taking up something during Lent in solidarity with those who live with less. Then get together with others from your Church, or your family and friends to make an even bigger impact.

Grave concerns for the people of Ukraine

The Uniting Church in Australia joins the World Council of Churches in expressing concern for the people of Ukraine amid escalating tensions. President Rev Sharon Hollis encouraged Uniting Church people to join other Christians and Churches in prayer for a return to dialogue and a pathway to peace.

Going Deeper with the Assembly Circles this Lent

Throughout Lent, the Assembly Circles of Interest will be sharing weekly reflections based on one of the Lectionary readings for the coming Sunday, as well as stories, images, prayers and songs, inviting us to "Go Deeper" in our relationship with God, our community and our world.
Week 1 from the Walking Together as First and Second Peoples Circle will be shared early next week.

From Kiribati to Ulverstone, Tasmania

Meet Taua Ritiata: the Community Connections Worker with the Synod of Victoria and Tasmania Justice and Mission Unit who is building a sense of connection and community for seasonal workers employed throughout Tasmania. This includes workers from his home island Kiribati who have found a home and warm welcome at Ulverstone Uniting Church. Says local minister Rev Gospel Ralte, "they are not only hard workers, they are hard singers as well.”

Prayer for Brazil

Revs Esteban Liévano and Fernando Torres of the Uniting Church Ibero-Latino National Conference have shared prayers for Brazil in Portuguese and English following unprecedented rain north of the city of Rio de Janeiro leading to fatal landslides. More than 100 people are still missing.

Wurundjeri link honoured at CTM

Ngarrnga, which means reflection/thought, Bagung, which means gathering, and Buwi which means create, are among nine spaces at the Centre for Theology and Ministry (CTM) in Melbourne which have been renamed using the language of the Wurundjeri people. A ceremony was held to mark the renaming of rooms which acknowledge in a permanent way the location of CTM on Wurundjeri land, and more deeply express a commitment to our Covenant relationship as First and Second Peoples.

A community's heartache and joy

Frontier Services Bush Chaplain John Tomkins sprang into action when 4-year-old Cleo Smith disappeared from a campsite in Carnarvon, WA in October last year. John provided a reassuring presence for the community amid the shock of her disappearance and the painstaking search which lasted for 18 days.
“The incredible wave of relief when little Cleo was found not only alive but well was something the whole town celebrated,” John recalls.
