For more than 50 years, Marilyn Jones was a vital leader in the creative and worship arts ministry at Montreat Conference Center. In 1974 she started what was known as the “Upper Story”, now known as the Sally Jones Pottery in the Currie Craft Center. The 47 years since have seen incredible growth, from humble beginnings with one pottery wheel and one kiln to today’s vibrant and active craft and pottery center with classes filled to capacity. Marilyn’s legacy is imprinted on Montreat’s art ministry like a fingerprint on a beloved clay pot. She continued teaching pottery until the age of 86, maintaining a presence in Montreat, her “spiritual home”, until her passing in 2018.
In recognition and continuation of that incredible legacy, members of Marilyn’s family came together to honor her through a gift to Montreat in the summer of 2021. The Marilyn Jones Endowment was created to support summer staff positions in the Sally Jones Pottery. These staff members gather together from across the country to teach and serve in a unique arts ministry environment, spending time with other artists in an intentional, creative community. We hope you will join us in recognizing and celebrating the life and legacy of Marilyn Jones through this exciting new endowment fund. |
