UC National News 8-14 September - Act2 calls on Presbytery Ministers, Meet our new DNG Advocate, tributes for Stuart McMillan and more

Calling all Presbytery Ministers: Let's talk future

The Act2 conversation about the future shape of the Uniting Church is seeking input from Presbytery Ministers across the country.

UCA President Rev Sharon Hollis and General Secretary Colleen Geyer will host the Act2 Presbytery Ministers National Consultation on 22 October and 5 November 2021, with a
focus on the future of the UCA through the lens of Presbyteries, ministry and mission.

What do we need to remember about who we are as the UCA as we look to the future? What challenges and realities do we need to face? What do we need to encourage, support and resource in ministry and mission?

If you haven't already, read all about what Act2 is and why it is important for us to have this conversation now. Keep an eye out for the many opportunities to participate across the Church or email your ideas now

Meet the Advocate: Discipling the Next Generations

We're very excited to introduce the Advocates for the Assembly Circles of Interest for this triennium who were commissioned this week!  As we've been exploring our Intergenerational commitments as a church, we're delighted to share this video from Discipling the Next Generations Advocate Virginia Lavaki who invites us to join the Circle in finding ways to empower, enrich and encourage not only the future generations but the now generations.

Growing Up Uniting: a new narrative for our Church

For many years a powerful narrative about the ageing profile of our communities has been shaping the UCA, writes Bethany Broadstock, but the collection of essays in the newly published book Growing Up Uniting reminds us of the new generations that call the Uniting Church home. Their reflections offer a glimpse into their experiences and their hopes for a movement that is "committed to walk into the future."

Giving thanks for the faithful service of Stuart McMillan

The Uniting Church Assembly last week gave thanks for the enormous contribution of Stuart McMillan on his retirement from formal ministry. His final words were an encouragement to truly live as an intercultural church,
“We must hold this sense that when we work alongside each other, share together, listen deeply and grow in both faith and perspective, God can do so much more than we can ask or imagine.”

“Preventing violence against women is everyone’s business"

On the virtual sidelines of the inaugural National Summit on Women's Safety, UnitingCare Australia National Director Claerwen Little has said partnerships from all sectors with local community engagement must be a focal point of a national plan to prevent violence against women. Read the media release outlining UnitingCare's policy priorities.

"In relation with all creation"

As we mark the Season of Creation across the Church, the team at Leprena UAICC Tasmania has shared a blessing by proud Palawa woman Alison Overeem, and other resources that tell the story of First Peoples' living on and caring for creation in Lutruwita (Tasmania). Check out this and other prayers and resources.

"Someone that's there to help me"

This week as the Uniting Church marks its first Child Safe Week, we are reminded by our youngest members about what it means to be safe. Hear from them and find out what's been happening across the Church this week.
