UC National News 22-28 September - Hope + Hospitality @BankstownUCA, Rolling out the fala, UCA celebrates Mark Kickett as MoW, Peace Day and more

Hope and hospitality in a COVID-19 hotspot

When the Delta variant of COVID-19 struck Sydney in June, it rapidly spread to the city’s southwest. The LGA of Canterbury-Bankstown emerged as a major hotspot.

As the community went into stringent lockdown measures to help stop the spread, Bankstown District Uniting Church swung into action finding a way to support those left most vulnerable. Each week a team of 35 volunteers is working to deliver and distribute bags filled with bread, fruit and vegetables, and a message of care.

We know there are many examples of Uniting Church communities that are working to provide practical care and sharing messages of hope right now. Email us your stories.

Rolling out the fala on Intergenerational

This week we close our series exploring what it means to be an Intergenerational Church. Assembly National Consultant Rev Charissa Suli shares a wrap on the recent Let's Yarn, sharing insights from the gathering about the importance of cultivating relationships and understanding across generations and cultures as we seek God's leading.

'So that your creation is restored'

We continue to share prayers, resources and actions as we mark this Season of Creation. This week's prayer comes from Hee Won Chang in both Korean and English, that God's "breath of life, healing and reconciliation roll down like a river, so that your Creation is restored and truly becomes a home for all."

Why the Uniting Church supports School Strike 4 Climate

A free webinar to be hosted by broadcaster and journalist Julie McCrossin will explore why the Uniting Church supports students taking to the street for action on climate. Organised by the Synod of NSW/ACT and Uniting (NSW.ACT), the forum will engage the views of key people across the UCA. Join on Wednesday 6 October from 7.15pm to 8.30pm. Register here.

Called to serve with Jesus

The Uniting Church is celebrating the formal admission of Rev Mark Kickett as a Minister of the Word in the UCA. Mark is the National Interim Chair of the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress (UAICC).
The joyous occasion for the UCA is another step for Mark in a deeply-felt call to serve Christ and to pursue justice and reconciliation for First Peoples. But a call to ministry was not always on the cards for Mark - read more of his story.

Uniting in love and care during COVID-19

How do we as leaders and members of the UCA continue to walk together in love and care during the time of COVID-19? This was one of the topics when Uniting Church President Rev Sharon Hollis, and members of the Assembly Resourcing Unit, met with leaders from five UCA National Conferences.

Faiths join to pray for Peace

Uniting Church President Rev Sharon Hollis offered this prayer on behalf of the UCA in an Interfaith prayer service to mark the International Day of Peace on 21 September. You can now watch the recorded service on our Facebook page, and read the occasional address delivered by Moderator of the NSW/ACT Synod Rev Simon Hansford.

Older Persons Sunday: dignity and hope for all ages

The first Uniting Church Older Persons Sunday is on 3 October. A booklet of worship resources is now available for use by local communities of faith, including a prayer from Assembly Theologian-in-Residence Rev Dr Ji Zhang.

“We pray for Australia as a nation,
give us the Spirit of life,
to turn away from ageism…”
