Indigenous Children Then, Now, and Tomorrow: Online Panel, 29 September

Indigenous Ministries and Justice is hosting an Orange Shirt Day panel on September 29, 2021 at 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. ET. Panelists Allison Forsberg, Jocelyn Formsma, Leeann Shimoda, and the Rev. Murray Pruden will explore how Indigenous children and families were and continue to be impacted by colonialism.

They will answer a series of questions posed by our moderator Springwater Hester-Meawassige, which will touch on a range of topics including Indigenous Children in Residential Schools, Sixties Scoop, Millennial Scoop, and bringing our children home. For more information or to sign up please visit the United in Learning website.

Mental Health First Aid Training (MHFA)

MHFA for Adults who Interact with Youth is intended for an adult Indigenous audience whose primary focus is Indigenous youth (aged 14-25). Any unfilled spaces will be offered to non-Indigenous adults working with Indigenous youth.

In addition to the four most common disorders discussed in MHFA BASIC, this course includes instruction about eating disorders and deliberate self-injury. Participants who take this course are well prepared to interact confidently about mental health with the young people in their lives, including at schools, extra-curricular activities, social services, family, friends, and communities.

Indigenous Ministries and Justice will be offering 15 spaces for Mental Health First Aid Supporting Youth on the following days:
  • October 12, 2021: 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. ET
  • October 13, 2021: 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. ET
Each participant will receive a certificate upon completion providing that they complete both days in full. Anyone interested in registering can contact Springwater on September 15 via email: shmeawassige@united-church.ca.
