When The Black Church Leads... We All Succeed By Antjuan Seawright, Columnist My mother grew up at the Maloney Baptist Church in Woodford, SC while my Dad, of course, grew up in the Prodigal AME Church of Swansea, SC. As a result, as I explain to folks regularly, I was raised in that crossover between the Baptist and AME churches and I consider myself part of both - a BaptiME. I got to see a lot of things from that vantage point and learned more than I could possibly write down. Read More Here |

Servants worthy of their hire: Fairly Compensating Church Staff in the age of Virtual Worship John Thomas III, Editor of the TCR The beginning of a new year is a time to reflect and vision for the future. We set goals and make resolutions and examine what we need to change. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues with most of our church buildings closed for regular Sunday morning worship, AME congregations globally have proven resilient in adapting ways to maintain our corporate worship. Like the Israelites from the Bible, we have built our tabernacles in this wilderness understanding that our praise and worship is not confined to four walls. Read More Here |

God is still in Control, Part 2 By Bishop Paul J. M. Kawimbe The first part of this commentary is available here.
This passage “Likewise, when a foreigner who is not of your people Israel comes from a far country for the sake of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm when he comes and prays toward this house, hear from heaven your dwelling place and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and that they may know that this house that I have built is called by your name” (2 Chronicles 6:32-33 ESV) is consistent with others scriptures where God explicitly extends the invitation to all who call upon the name of the LORD, it has made clear that anyone who acknowledges God’s name and authority can pray with the same confidence of being heard by God. A Stitch in Time By Bishop Jeffery Leath
The 51st General Conference plan calls for each district delegation (with alternate delegates) to gather in its own room in Orlando, Florida. There will be communication connections along with a space for leadership and observers (possibly). Each room will be limited to 50% of its intended capacity for social distancing along with standard medical procedures. This is reasonable, creative and may succeed. Kudos General Conference Commission! The elaborate plan, however, is not the best we can offer. Read More Here |

“Walking with the Wind’ Dr. Herman O. Kelly, Jr., Contributing Writer As an instructor at Louisiana State University I received a book award. One of the books I selected was “Walking with the Wind, by John Lewis. This book was a memoir of the Civil Rights Movement. The wind is an indication of change and a new weather pattern. Creatures are always aware of the changing wind currents. Eagles usually find the strong wind current to guide their flight. Walking with the wind means that we must walk with the Spirit of God. In biblical script God’s Spirit is compared to wind.

Calling the Church to Consciousness By George Pratt, Connectional YPD Parliamentarian
On Sunday, November 29th, a collective of progressive United Methodists founded a new Wesleyan denomination, the Liberation Connexion (LMX), reported by the Religious News Service (RNS). According to the LMX website, the denomination seeks to construct a beloved community in refuting “powers and privileges plaguing Methodism: patriarchy, transphobia, and heteronormativity.” The AME Church is also plagued by sins of hegemony, homophobia, and hypocrisy.

More than half of teens and young adults who say they are affiliated with an organized religion also say they have little or no trust in organized religion. In other words, they are involved in religious institutions on paper but are disengaged at some level because they don’t trust religious institutions — even the ones they belong to. Read More Here |
