Emmaus Community
Imagine an intentional community that lived with three principles: prayer, presence, and simplicity... Emmaus Community is a "new monastic" community with ties to both the United Church and the Anglican Church. And they are trailblazing a new ministry! They are a worshipping community with Covenanted Members (who live their rule, in community, in the neighbourhood) and Companion Members (who are called to live their rule in their own neighbourhoods.) They also have many friends, who chose to be part of the community without formal connection. And with COVID-19, they are learning how this can be lived out differently, and how it can look different with people showing an interest in the community from around the world. Part of this journey has been to keep learning and evolving. A helpful part in the early days was to learn how to bootstrap. Early on, they experimented with micro industry, including both bread and beer making (like monastic ministries from hundreds of years ago). They try new programs and new approaches, and just as importantly they learn how to let things go. They call the framework for this “The Evolving Constellation”. Watch the whole story. |
