FROM THE MEDICAL BENEVOLENCE FOUNDATION: With all the media hysteria about the Coronavirus, it is easy to get a little worried. Numerous people have expressed concern about how Coronavirus might impact countries where MBF and our partners are investing. Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. Here is an interesting Coronavirus fact: Influenza viruses are greatly affected by heat and humidity. Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) says the flu viruses in the US die off quickly as the weather turns warm. IF (and that's an important 'if') the coronavirus acts in the same manner as other flu viruses then the good news is that our partner countries stand to be much less impacted – if at all. There are some advantages to living in hot humid places. Let's walk in peace and maintain an attitude of prayer together for all of our partners.

Church on the Corner LogoWORLD MISSION SURVEY OF CONGREGATIONS. Last week congregations for whom we have emails began receiving invitations to participate in a short new “Church on the Corner” survey about their mission involvement and mission interests. Summaries of responses will go to Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) World Mission and other PC(USA) ministries and will help these ministries tailor their programs for these congregations. The email invitations went to a mix of church email addresses, clerk of session email addresses, and pastor email addresses. According to our web survey software, the survey takes about six minutes to complete. Here is a link to the survey: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/5452189/Church-on-the-Corner-World-Mission. The participation of every congregation in the survey is critical for strengthening mission partnership among congregations, presbyteries, and PC(USA) national ministries. We appreciate your support during what I know is a busy time, with Lent, public health concerns, and so on. -Perry Chang, PhD, Research Analyst, Research Services, PC(USA), 502-569-5139 (direct), 800-728-7228 ext. 5139, perry.chang@pcusa.org.

THANK YOU. Dear Friends, In these busy days of holy days and holidays, of family and church budget planning, I write simply to say thank you for making Presbyterian Disaster Assistance a priority in the midst of many opportunities to give and serve. Your gifts are deeply needed and greatly appreciated, and I am privileged to speak this word of gratitude on behalf of those for whom your generosity brings renewed hope and joy in the wake of disaster and its aftermath. The Christmas season and New Year’s always seem stuffed with opportunities and obligations, preparations and resolutions. But we people of faith keep time in a different way! Yet Christmastide and Epiphany remind us that we are a people whose choices – for giving, for engaging our time and our talents – do not happen in a vacuum. Like the Magi, we seek to follow God’s light wherever it is made visible in the most unexpected circumstances, and become wise men and women as we behold God’s work made flesh and follow. Your generosity brings light in dark places; relief and support and recovery among the vulnerable – persons like the holy Child and his mother, who, together with Joseph wandered in search of shelter, fled persecution in their home country and became refugees in Egypt. When you do it unto the least of these, as Jesus told his disciples in Matthew 25, you give gifts to Christ, and make the coming of his reign a reality. From the Bahamas to Syria, from Texas to California, in South Sudan and in South Carolina, lives are being transformed and communities restored by your generous gifts to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. It is a privilege to serve together in a Church that works toward the vision of the tree of life in the midst of the City, whose leaves are for the healing of the nations, even as we welcome the appearing of the One whose life, death, and resurrection is both the beginning and end of our story. In Christ’s peace, The Rev. Dr. Laurie A. Kraus, Director, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.

PASTORS & RULING ELDERS ~ Continuing Ed Workshops Spring 2020 (Presented by Inter-Presbytery Leadership Formation IPLF):
Pastoral Care: Help for Those Affected by Addiction. Pastoral care with addicted persons or those family members affected by the addiction can be challenging for those seeking to shepherd the congregation.  Providing care-giving in ways that are realistic, acknowledge the issues and demonstrate the love of God are ongoing concerns of both the Pastor and the local congregation.  Building upon traditional pastoral care, this workshop will focus on particular practices and resources in addressing these questions. Saturday, March 14, 2020, 12:30-3:30 pm. Instructors: Rev. Lee McDermott & Rev. Robert Hedges
Polity. Class objectives are to provide leaders with the basic background and structure of Presbyterian Polity; to equip leaders to lead Session and Congregation with approval of Presbytery; and to introduce essential structure of the Constitution of the PCUSA as a tool for leaders. Saturday, April 18, 2020, 12:30-3:30 pm. Instructor: RE John Rodgers, Stated Clerk, Washington Presbytery
Proclaiming the Word. Called to proclaim the Word, we often associate this responsibility with preaching during worship services. While exegesis and hermeneutics are covered elsewhere, this workshop will challenge and encourage you in both the preparation and practices of proclaiming the Word.  Whether you are an experienced preacher or someone just beginning, all of us want to continue to grow in this important calling. Saturday, May 16, 2020, 12:30-3:30 pm. Instructor: Rev. Ken Foust, Grace Community Presby. Church
All of the workshops will be held at Redstone Presbytery Center, 1004 Mt. Pleasant Road. Greensburg, PA 15601. To register or questions, contact: Bobbie Martin at Redstone Presbytery. Call 724-837-6737 or e-mail secretary@redstonepresbytery.org.
