In two separate letters issued on 1 January, the WCC conveyed its heartfelt condolences to churches across Switzerland and to the Swiss authorities, emphasizing prayer, compassion, and international solidarity in the face of profound loss. Around 40 people have been killed and 115 injured. In a pastoral letter addressed to the churches in Switzerland, WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay offered words of comfort and Christian solidarity. “You are not alone. People around the world are praying for you, mourning with you, and standing with you in solidarity”, wrote Pillay. “May you find strength and comfort in one another, and may the memories of your loved ones become a source of light and peace in the difficult days ahead.” The letter encouraged communities to draw strength from one another during the difficult days ahead and expressed gratitude for all those providing care and support to victims, families, and communities impacted by the tragedy. In a letter addressed to Swiss President Guy Parmelin, Pillay extended sincere condolences on behalf of the global ecumenical fellowship. “We commend the dedicated efforts of your government to alleviate the suffering of the affected families and to provide indispensable care to those who remain hospitalized, and we pray for their full and swift recovery”, wrote Pillay. The message acknowledged the “unimaginable grief and sorrow” experienced by the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and assured them of the prayers of churches worldwide. Special mention was made of the diverse nationalities affected by the tragedy, highlighting the international dimension of the loss.
