"God loves us, God loves you all"

The Uniting Church congratulates the Roman Catholic Church and Pope Leo XIV

The Uniting Church in Australia warmly congratulates the Roman Catholic Church on the historic election of Pope Leo XIV, the first pontiff born in the United States of America.

Following his election, the new pontiff greeted thousands in Saint Peter's Square and around the world in Italian and Spanish, opening with simple yet profound words which echoed the words of the risen Christ to his friends: "Peace be with you all."

"God loves us, God loves you all, and evil will not prevail! We are all in the hands of God. Therefore, without fear, united hand in hand with God and among ourselves, we move forward. We are disciples of Christ."

"We must seek together how to be a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges, always open to receive like this square with its open arms, all who need our charity, our presence, dialogue and love."

President of the Uniting Church in Australia Rev Charissa Suli released a statement early this morning congratulating Pope Leo XIV, and the Catholic Church worldwide on a new spiritual leader.

"We pray that God will grant Pope Leo XIV the wisdom to lead with humility, the courage to walk with truth and love, and the grace to listen deeply to the cries of the earth and the hopes of all people."

We assure the new Pope of our prayers and affirm our shared hope in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and our common call to be bridge builders in a fractured world.
