Statement on Break-in at Howard University's Mays Hall and Status of TCR Archives
Greetings in the New Year and Season of Christmastide!
Last week, a group broke into Benjamin Mays Hall on Howard University's campus and distributed a video on TikTok detailing their actions. Mays Hall housed the Howard School of Divinity until 2015 and still contains many historical materials. The video displayed an edition of The Christian Recorder, prompting concerns over the status of our periodical's archives.
While it was distressing to see the haphazard state of the historical materials in Mays Hall, that library is not an official repository of our publication. The following institutions maintain archives of various editions of The Christian Recorder from 1852 until now.
Mother Bethel AME Church
Payne Theological Seminary
Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary
Wisconsin Historical Society
The newspaper also participates in the National Newspaper Publisher Association digital archive administered by the Howard University Library.
We are thankful for the foresight of past editors who took steps to preserve our legacy and the academic institutions who have assisted in this effort deeming our publication worthy of historical preservation.
The Christian Recorder is the official newspaper of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the oldest continuously produced publication by persons of African descent.
