Tomorrow Is National Indigenous Peoples Day!

Indigenous Drum

Tomorrow, June 21, is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage and diverse cultures of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.

You can take part in this special day by attending a local Indigenous celebration, supporting Indigenous businesses and restaurants, donating to an Indigenous program through GiftswithVision.ca, reading a book by an Indigenous author, listening to Indigenous music, enjoying Indigenous art at a museum or gallery, and so much more!

Whatever you decide to do, please take some time to celebrate. For more on National Indigenous Peoples Day, you can watch the Moderator's message, and check out our Indigenous worship resources.

Advocating for Refugees Today and Every Day

Migrants arrive at a gate in the border fence after crossing from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, into El Paso, Texas, in 2023.

On this day, World Refugee Day, we recognize the mass movement of people leaving their homes to seek safety, security, and well-being in countries around the world, and here in Canada. Some make it safely, but others perish in the attempt, as we saw last week when an overcrowded boat sank off the shores of Greece. The need to support refugees seeking safety is crucial, and governments must educate and advocate for their protection, no matter how or where they enter our borders.

We reiterate our disappointment in the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday to uphold the Safe Third Country Agreement, despite the Court knowing and recognizing that the United States is not a safe country for refugees.

We must actively protect and fight for their rights. Read the full news story.

Your Generosity Matters: Your Gifts Help to Restore Lost Languages

Indigenous Elder helping a Youth

Today, fewer than 600 people can still speak Inuinnaqtun fluently. Many lost the language when they were removed from their communities and sent to residential schools. In partnership with Mission and Service, Inuinnaqtun language mentors get resources to allow them to spend 300 hours a year working with their apprentices to begin to restore their language.
