Online Panel Discussion: Who Is Asian?
Asian Heritage Month is a time to celebrate Asian communities. Recently, Centre for Christian Studies Principal Alan Lai was in conversation with friends from diverse cultural heritages rooted in a geographical area called Asia, and they wondered, “Who is Asian? Why are we called Asian? Do we see ourselves as Asians? Who gave us this nomenclature?”
On Wednesday, May 17, you're invited alongside several members from The United Church of Canada community to reflect on the question: “Are you Asian?” Participants will hear how each panellist addresses this question and have an opportunity to engage with them.
Come and join this conversation whether you are Asian or not. This discussion may shed light on the lingering power of colonization and the implications for intercultural ministry.
Panellists: Rev. Dr. Alan Lai, Principal, Centre for Christian Studies Dr. Emo Yango, Church in Mission Unit, General Church Office, United Church of Canada Sandy Hwang, Seminarian, Vancouver School of Theology HyeRim Park, Diaconal Ministry student, Centre for Christian Studies
When: Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. CT and 7:00 p.m. EDT. Where: Online on Zoom—register today!

8th Canadian Forum on Inter-Church Dialogues In-Person Gathering in Edmonton, AB
The 8th Canadian Forum on Inter-Church Dialogues (CFICD) will take place June 8-10, 2023, in-person in Edmonton, AB, and it's not too late to register. The theme of this triennium's CFICD – ᐯᐦᐅᓇᐣ / Pêhonân – A Gathering-Waiting Place: Voices of Indigenous Followers of Jesus in the Ecumenical Movement—calls us into a deeper understanding and appreciation of the wisdom, gifts, and experiences that Indigenous followers of Jesus can offer the ecumenical movement. Too often, their voices have been absent from "official" Canadian ecumenical dialogues. This gathering will explore how the churches in Canada can engage in as rich an ecumenical discussion as the diversity of this land and its peoples calls for.
