WCC NEWS: Metropolitan Nifon, new WCC vice moderator: “pray and act concretely to alleviate the sufferings in the world”

The World Council of Churches (WCC)  has appointed H.E. Metropolitan Nifon of Târgoviște, Romanian Orthodox Church, to serve as vice moderator of the central committee, fulfilling the service of the late Metropolitan Gennadios, and will serve on the leadership of the WCC central committee.

He has also been appointed as co-moderator of the Permanent Committee on Consensus and Collaboration,

Metropolitan Nifon currently serves on the WCC executive committee and as moderator of the Public Issues Committee. He also serves on the executive committee of the Joint Working Group between the Roman Catholic Church and the WCC.

Metropolitan Nifoon said he was surprised by the unanimous vote of nomination and election as vice moderator of the WCC central committee. “I will do my best to meet the honour and trust put in me to serve the ideal of unity and strengthening the fellowship within the ecumenical movement,” he said. “Being together with other Christians, the Orthodox try to understand the mission of the church of Christ, our Lord and Saviour, as a primary duty in our time of suffering and challenges due to secularization, war crisis, pandemic consequences, and food crisis.”

Metropolitan Nifon added: “The churches pray and act concretely to alleviate the sufferings in the world.”

Metropolitan Nifon is a member of the International Board for the Anglican-Orthodox Dialogue; a member of the Romanian Academy of Science of Romania; and professor and dean of the Theological Faculty of Valahia University in Targoviste. He holds a doctor honoris causa at University Valahia, 2013.

He is author of many theological books and articles.
