UC National News 1-7 June - Living the Covenant Locally, Pentecost video in 14 languages, uniting to support the Statement from the Heart and more

An invitation to Live the Covenant Locally

This week as we mark National Reconciliation Week, the Uniting Church Assembly and the Walking Together as First and Second Peoples Circle launch a new initiative – Living the Covenant Locally.

It is an invitation for Second Peoples of our Church to engage in learning, theological study and action to deepen our relationship with First Peoples, to grow our understanding of the injustices they face and to live out our commitment to work for a more just Church and nation.

The theme for this week is to “Be Brave. Make Change.”

Advocate for the Walking Together as First and Second Peoples Circle Alison Overeem urged people across the church to help grow a “grassroots movement” committed to relationship and to living the Covenant locally.

“We are called to see and feel ‘walking together’," said Alison. "To know the covenant, is to feel it, and to BE it.”

"It's not just about a yarn or a conversation. It's about action, a realistic call to be and walk together.”

Don't forget, tomorrow, Thursday 2 June, the Walking Together as First and Second Peoples Circle is hosting an online conversation about what it means to walk together. It is open to people across the church.
Join from 7pm AEST.

'You renew the face of the earth': Pentecost video

Celebrating the diversity of languages across the Uniting Church and our unity in Christ, the Being a Multicultural Church Circle and the Uniting Church's multicultural National Conferences have collaborated on a short video to mark Pentecost this Sunday 5 June, which this year coincides with World Environment Day. UCA members read the words of Psalm 104:30 and a short prayer in 14 different languages, recalling our Spirit-inspired responsibility to care for the earth, our common home.

United in support of the Uluru Statement from the Heart

The Uniting Church has signed a historic Joint Resolution of Australian religious leaders in support of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Gathering in Sydney on the fifth anniversary of the Statement from the Heart, nine representatives of Australia’s peak religious bodies jointly called for immediate bipartisan action to hold a referendum on a First Nations voice to Parliament.

World Environment Day Worship Resource

The Social Justice Commission in the Synod of Western Australia has shared a worship resource for congregations to mark World Environment Day on Sunday 5 June. Falling this year on the same date as Pentecost, the resource includes a reflection and prayers which weave the two themes together.

Children and Families Ministry Resources

Find a suite of fantastic resources, reading and events to fuel your ministry with children and families in the latest Update from Chris Barnett in the Synod of Victoria and Tasmania. This edition also has some great ideas for an intergenerational Pentecost Sunday.

'I got connected to this land'

In a short video from Frontier Services for National Reconciliation Week, Bush Chaplain Julia Lennon speaks of the healing that is coming in outback Oodnadatta as she builds a new church on land which had previously been used to house First Nations children before they were taken from Country to Colebrook Home in Adelaide.
