UC National News 11-17 May - #UCA22 16th Assembly recap, the life-changing work of our agencies and more

Dwelling in Love at the 16th Assembly

The 16th Assembly meeting wrapped up on the Sunshine Coast on Monday afternoon after four days of joyful Christian community, prayer, worship and discerning the will of God for the Uniting Church in Australia.

Around 200 members from around the country came together on the lands of the Gubbi Gubbi people to continue the business of the triennial meeting which first met online in July last year.

One of the most significant moments of the meeting was a historic renewal of the Covenant between the Uniting Church in Australia and the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress which took place in worship on Friday night.

Read the full summary of the week and the important decisions reached in a range of areas including the Act2 project, climate justice, continuing witness, our commitment to being a multicultural Church, prevention of harm to the LGBTQI+ community, ageing and aged care, and the Diaconate.

Wider recognition for the human rights of older people

The Uniting Church in Australia and UnitingCare Australia have issued a joint media release after a decision of the 16th Assembly affirmed support for a range of measures in ageing and aged care, including a wage rise for aged care workers. It also established Older Persons Sunday, a day in the Church’s calendar to recognise the contribution of older people, and endorsed national network Uniting Friends of Ageing.

'We are in for the long haul'

In her message for the latest edition of Frontier News, National Director of Frontier Services Jannine Jackson reflects on the journey so far and how the enduring commitment to stand with people in the bush is being lived out in some of the most difficult years in recent memory.
