Launch of Kindred WorksYesterday saw the launch of Kindred Works, the development and asset manager for the United Property Resource Corporation (UPRC), a collective that was founded by The United Church of Canada. Kindred Works plans to help reimagine church properties for the common good and to respond to Canada’s housing crisis. They will enable churches to continue offering the services and support that already exist, and extend the potential of their spaces to as many people as possible, by providing mixed-income homes with the goal of housing 34,000 people over the next 15 years. This is part of the United Church's bold commitment to build 5,000 attainable new rental housing units by 2037. To achieve our shared ambitions, Kindred Works will bring together a wide range of experts, from architects to sustainability leaders to community and culture creators. General Secretary Michael Blair says that, "In the preamble to A New Creed, we are reminded that every generation is invited to rearticulate their faith with new words and concepts. Kindred Works (and indeed, UPRC) is the United Church's re-articulation of its faith with regards to property. Property was always an investment as a gathering space for enrichment, community, and transformation. Redevelopment uses housing, community building, and service space to reimagine property while maintaining the values of gathering space, community, and transformation."
