Diversity and Inclusion Shareholder Win

The Pension Plan of The United Church of Canada recently filed a shareholder proposal with Constellation Software urging the company to improve their DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) practices. The proposal requested the preparation of a report on the company’s plans to identify, address, mitigate, and dismantle racial disparities within its workforce. Despite the Board of Constellation Software recommending that shareholders vote against the resolution, shareholders approved it!

The United Church of Canada Pension Plan is very proud of this outcome—read the full news piece.

Temporary Increase to Minimum Mileage Reimbursement Rate

Photo of a gas station at night time.

Considering the recent spike in gasoline prices and the prediction that they may remain at these levels for some time, the Executive of the General Council, at its meeting April 30, 2022, temporarily increased the minimum mileage reimbursement rate to $0.46/km. This is 75% of the CRA 2022 “reasonable allowance rate” and is effective May 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022. The General Secretary was authorized to extend this temporary increase to December 31, 2022, if fuel prices remain high. This applies to ministry personnel in pastoral relationships, volunteers, elected and appointed positions with the General Council, and staff of the General Council Office.

United Church Bookstore: Jesus and the Marginalized

May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada! Jesus and the Marginalized is a great book to start exploring the theme. It examines the meaning of Jesus for Koreans in The United Church of Canada and in the Canadian context. After discussing the marginality that Koreans experience here, the book examines how Jesus enables Koreans to withstand this and live prophetically in their situation.
