The Audacity of Hope: A Throwback

By Rev. Arionne Yvette Williams, Contributing Writer

I write these words just 20 days before the 2020 General Election in the United States. Though I sure hope we would have all voted the time you read this offering, we still may not know the outcome of the election. This is because there has been unprecedented turnout for early and absentee voting. In fact, at the time of submitting this article, a record 14 million Americans have already cast their ballots, up from only 1.4 million around the same time in 2016. I am no statistics whiz but that represents a 900% increase in early and absentee voter turnout.

Who Will Go On Record?

Rev. Dr. Jennifer Leath, 5th Episcopal District

Pope Francis is “evolving.” According to the New York Times, in the documentary, “Francesco,” Pope Francis rearticulates his perspectives on LGBTQ people and rights, stating: “Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. . . .  They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.” Francis further extends this articulation of the belonging of LGBTQ people in the family of G*d with regard and concern for their legal status: “What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered.” And why can’t we evolve?  We canevolve – and we should!  What could evolution look like for us?

Risks

By Byron Washington, Columnist

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Federal Railroad Administration recently launched a campaign with the caption:  “Stop. Trains Can’t.” The campaign is to encourage individuals not to ignore railway warning signals and not to drive around a lowered gate at a railroad crossing. NHTSA’s website states that a train can stop but “it may take a mile or more for some trains to come to a complete stop.” Also, you may think that you can beat a train but “a train is three feet wider than the track on each side.”

Fisk Chapel Blessed by Community Support

Fisk Chapel AME Church was blessed this past weekend with great support from the Fair Haven community. A Facebook post was written by Fisk Chapel member, Melanie Woods, asking for any benevolent assistance in painting the exterior of the church structure as most of the small (but mighty) members are senior citizens and unable to provide more than donations and encouragement.

Next Time

By Rev. Barry Settle, Contributing Writer

Jonah 3:3 says, “So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across.” We have not gathered in our sanctuary for worship since March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down in-person gatherings in the sanctuary. So, as of the time of this writing, it has been seven months since we have had worship in person.

St. John Continues Partnership with Habitat for Humanity

Tami McGhee, Ninth Episcopal District

Even in the middle of a pandemic Habitat for Humanity of Madison County continues to provide affordable housing to those in need.  Habitat recently cleared 8 acres of land to build over 30 homes and a community park.  The subdivision is in Northeast Huntsville off Meridian Street near J. F. Drake State Community & Technical College.

Standing Alone Together

By Rev. Dr. Versey Williams, Contributing Writer

First Corinthians 3:16 says, “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” Standing alone together can be challenging and strengthening. The devil would have us believe that our lives will never get back to whatever we considered normal before COVID-19.  Think about this: during this pandemic, we are forced to live out God’s ideal. In 1 Chronicles 17:4-5 we hear, “Go and tell my servant David: Thus says the Lord: You shall not build me a house to live in.

When We Pray
By Emmaya Swift, Connectional YPD Historiographer/Statistician

Life, as we know it, may not ever be the same but one thing that remains the same is God’s love. God has kept us and continues to keep us. He is still doing amazing things even in these trying times. Through the good and bad, we must keep God first and be grateful in spite of it all. It is important that we—as God’s children—remain prayed up. We must remember to be hopeful and optimistic that he will bring us through, regardless of what it seems. We cannot give up on God because he won’t give up on us.

Healthier Food in our Churches

By Rev. Natalie Mitchem, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist

Matthew 4:23 says, “Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.” Recently, it was announced that African Americans are dying and suffering at a greater rate from COVID-19 than other ethnic groups.

Worship and Study at Home Resources

The pace at which the COVID-19 virus has been spreading has unwittingly caused some disruption, but the Church will continue to “meet” in whatever forms modern technology allows. I pray you will find these resources helpful for public and private use. We pray also for your and your family’s safety as we continue to trust God for a swift relief from this pandemic.
