WCC NEWS: WCC mourns loss of His Holiness Patriarch Irinej, head of Orthodox Church of Serbia

In a letter of condolence to the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church, World Council of Churches interim general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca expressed sadness at the passing of His Holiness Patriarch Irinej, head of Orthodox Church of Serbia.

“The legacy of Patriarch Irinej, who was a well-known personality of contemporary Orthodoxy, remains forever,” wrote Sauca. “At the heart of his spiritual leadership was the promotion of a culture of peace.” Sauca described Patriarch Irinej as an inspired spiritual leader. “On behalf of the World Council of Churches I extend our profound condolences to the members of the Holy Synod and to the entire Serbian Orthodox Church,” Sauca concluded. “May his memory be eternal!” Read the full text of the condolence letter Serbian Orthodox Church
