“I am so pleased, on behalf of the whole global fellowship of the World Council of Churches, to congratulate you, Bishop Johnson, on your 18 years of committed and consequential leadership of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada,” reads the letter. “Your stalwart commitment to full communion (especially with the Anglican Church of Canada), and to wider ecumenical relations, reconciliation, and gender justice, demonstrates the relevance of ecumenical Christian discipleship to the world.”

Pillay mentioned Johnson’s support for the ecumenical Season of Creation in particular, as well as her service to the WCC presently on the central and executive committees, and as moderator of the WCC Public Issues Committee, a member of the WCC Gender Justice Reference Group, and a Thursdays in Black ambassador.

“We are grateful that you will continue to bless us in the WCC with your presence and your wisdom in these capacities,” reads the letter. “As we celebrate your prophetic ministry, Bishop Johnson, we also thank God for the church you have served, and we offer our prayers and very best wishes for the next chapter in your and the church’s discipleship and ministry.”
