The nearly 1 million-square-foot warehouse complex was slated to become a mega immigration detention center and training grounds for Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. It would have been the largest immigration detention facility in the country. Now, the Socorro, Texas, warehouse is set to be put up for sale and “will no longer be used by the federal government for detention purposes,” according to U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso. The change of plans are due, at least in part, to intense local opposition — much of it from parishioners in the community’s three Catholic parishes, reports Robert Moore and Cindy Ramirez as part of a collaboration between El Paso Matters and RNS. They cited moral objections and warned that the town's infrastructure couldn't support it. “Human beings should not be treated like sardines. We are not sardines,” El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz said in Spanish to 50 people gathered on July 29 at San Felipe de Jesus parish in Socorro for a presentation on the proposed ICE detention center.
