RNS Morning Report - In historic appointment, Pope Leo names EWTN’s Montse Alvarado to lead Vatican communications office

When the Vatican announced a new leader for the Vatican communications office yesterday, there were so many ways that it was historic that it was hard for RNS National Reporter Aleja Hertzler-McCain to decide which to mention first.

When she called Catholic communications leaders to discuss the appointment of EWTN News President Maria Montserrat “Montse” Alvarado as prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, she asked about Alvarado’s status as a Mexican-American in an Italian-dominated curia, the youngest prefect appointed in memory and as the first woman who is not a religious sister to lead a Vatican office.

Hertzler-McCain also asked for their take on discourse already swirling online. Pope Francis had criticized “a large Catholic television channel,” widely believed to be EWTN, for “continually speaking ill of the pope” and attacking the church. Is the appointment of Alvarado, EWTN News president and COO, a move to the right?
