Backlash Dominoes When the conservative political group Turning Point USA scheduled a campus tour stop featuring Border Czar Tom Homan at Baylor University in Waco, Texas for April 22, they advertised it as a venue for celebrating free speech. But TPUSA probably didn’t expect to be the catalyst for a competing event, “All Are Neighbors,” which will welcome LGBTQ Christian activists to speak at the Christian university on Wednesday. On Friday, the Baptist General Convention of Texas, a group of Texas churches with historic ties to the university, announced that concerns over the LGBTQ speakers had prompted a review of their relationship with Baylor. RNS reporter Kathryn Post caught up with Baylor stakeholders to understand the controversy generated by both events. The dual events at Baylor are emblematic of broader tensions over free speech, religious freedom and political activism at religious universities, she writes. “It's two very different visions of the future,” said The Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush, a Baptist minister and president and CEO of Interfaith Alliance who is speaking at the “All Are Neighbors” event.
