“After courageously weathering decades of oppression and persecution, your church has flourished and grown along with the nation,” wrote Pillay. “It has reached out in a fulsome way to the larger society and in active and engaged service to its people.” Pillay commended the church’s embrace of diaconal work as well as of theological education, youth outreach, and congregational growth. “We recognize, too, Archbishop-elect, that our times also call for a full measure of courage and wisdom, to face and address the many uncertainties and dangers of our era, leaning heavily on our faith in Jesus Christ and his promise to be with us always,” wrote Pillay. “Assured of God’s love and the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit, may your leadership and that of your colleagues in ministry continue to be a faithful witness to our Lord, Jesus Christ, in the world.” Pillay expressed gratitude for Grants’ commitment to fostering unity among Christians, bearing witness to the love of Christ as one. “When we stand united in what is the essence of our faith — both within our churches and among them — we offer the world a powerful and credible testimony of God’s grace,” said Pillay. “So, as you take up your calling to offer a true pastoral presence and leadership to the whole church, we join our prayers in thanksgiving for your dedication and that of your predecessor, Archbishop Jānis Vanags.” Read the full letter |
